In a tryless encounter played in wet conditions, the home team achieved their first Super Rugby win over their neighbours in 11 outings.

First five-eighths Johan Goosen proved the kingpin for his side, landing four penalty goals and adding a dropped goal.

For the Bulls, Louis Fouche and Handre Pollard (two) also landed penalty goals.

Fouche missed several other chances in a poor display.

During the game former Springboks lock Victor Matfield got onto the field to claim his 126th Super Rugby cap, a South African record.

Cheetahs captain Adriaan Strauss said he was speechless after creating history with the win.

"I'm very proud of the guys. It lifts the spirits in the camp. We kept them under pressure and showed we can play in this weather," he said.

Bulls captain Flip van der Merwe said: "If you're not there 100 percent you're going to lose the game. We're not pleased with our game at all.

"We made a lot of errors. We have to learn and play our own game," he said.
