Can anyone stop Mark Telea?

Telea was simply unstoppable, scoring two tries and causing all sorts of problems for the opposition defence with his pace, footwork, and power. The numbers speak for themselves: the 26-year-old ran an incredible 248 metres - the most of anyone in the opening round - and beat 13 defenders while making four clean breaks and producing two try-assists.

It was a display that was lauded by pundits as the individual performance of the round and cemented his status as one of the most exciting young talents in New Zealand rugby.

After making his All Blacks debut against Scotland in Edinburgh last year, Telea said that he continued to work hard during the off-season to ensure he hit the ground running in 2023 with the Blues.

“I did a lot of running during the break and worked with our trainers. But credit to all of our big boys who set the platform for us outside backs to look fancy. Without them we can’t do what we do,” said Telea.

In a worrying sign for opposition teams, Telea said that there is still plenty of room for him to improve as a player.

“I’m no perfect player, I am still trying to work on my craft and polish up some things.”

As the Blues prepare to face the Brumbies in the Melbourne Super Round at AAMI Park on Sunday, the Brumbies will need to keep a close eye on Telea if they hope to contain the Blues' dangerous ball-runner and secure a win.

The Blues take on the Brumbies at 4pm NZT on Sunday 5 March at the Melbourne Super Round.
