Assistant coach David Hill said the early focus for the Gallagher Chiefs had been around their attack, something they needed to improve after last season's string of losses.

There had been discussion, debate and trial on that area [attack]of their game and there would be some changes when the side started their campaign.

There had been no specific attention to the losing streak the side experienced last year.

"The beauty of pre-season is that you start again. New guys come in who haven't played for the team and who weren't involved last year," he said.

What had been discussed was how they needed to do better as a team. Something standard for most teams ahead of a new campaign.

Interim head coach Clayton McMillan was bringing his spin to the role in the absence of Warren Gatland, who is on British & Irish Lions coaching duties.

McMillan was known to some of the coaching staff from having worked together previously while many of the players in the side were familiar with his work with the Maori All Blacks and Bay of Plenty.

"He's pretty strong on a couple of aspects of our game that we need to improve as well, defence being one of them and leading in that area has done a great job," he said.

As with coaches in other clubs, Hill felt the Blues would be the most likely location for Warriors captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck when he returns to rugby.

It was his ability to beat a man one-on-one that made him such a dangerous player, something that would occupy the mind of Hill and others in his role as a defence coach.

"There are not too many in the world at his level, in open space, [with] his footwork and acceleration," he said.

"[He's] a really exciting, x-factor player. We've got a few of them floating around Super Rugby. Then, there's also his ability to play at a high level as a captain in a pressure situation.

"I don't think he'll struggle in any sort of spotlight or any big games. I don't know the guy but that's my impression," he said.
