Coach Rob Penney said they wanted to give former Wallaby first five-eighths James O'Connor a starting chance while also easing Taha Kemara's workload after starting every game to date.

It was about managing Kemara's growth in a short space of time.

"But also, if something untoward was to happen, we've got players who have had time in the saddle. James gets a start and Rivez [Reihana], who did a great job for us last year is now fit and we're going to have those two in the mix."

Because the play of all three was not dissimilar, he doesn't expect a change in game style.

"We're in a good spot to have three capable men."

In the pack, lock Jamie Hannah is back, having recovered after two shoulder reconstructions. Penney said circumstances last year had resulted in him being over-used when they had no locking depth.

"We didn't do the right thing by him, and he had to go to the well every week. But now we're able to set him up to achieve what we all think he's capable of. It's the first step in that journey for him.

"We're not expecting miracles this week, but it's back into the saddle and we're looking forward to seeing him perform."

Penney said Moana Pasifika had done a terrific job in 2025 and had been there or thereabouts.

"They should be higher up the ladder, given their performances. But sometimes performances aren't reflected by where you are on the table.

"It's due to the success and abilities of Moana Pasifika that we've selected a strong team."

The side's try-scoring potency has been revived with 31 tries in their five games, the same as the Chiefs, who have played an extra game.

That was down to the work James Marshall has been doing in attack.

Penney said, "From the start of the season, I was excited about what James was bringing to our attack. He deserves all the kudos. He is being well supported by Brad Mooar, but James has stepped up in that area.

"The boys are excited about what he talks about every week and where our attack is getting to. And there seems to be a lot of confidence building in the shapes we're showing.

"There's still a few tricks up his sleeve, and over the duration of the campaign, they'll become clear because you keep having to evolve the game.

"One of the great things about this environment is he's surrounded by other great rugby brains in the playing roster.

"Having the availability of Will Jordan and David Havili, and Dallas McLeod is awesome for the vibrancy of the conversations and where the attack can go. James is tapping into that beautifully."
