Winless from their three starts, they face the Blues at North Harbour Stadium on Friday.

No8 Gareth Evans knows what is required to lift performance. Evans told media he had been in teams that had gone eight games without a win.

"You've just got to look at the positives and keep working on things that are going well, and improve things that aren't going so well," he said.

"We're trying hard. We know the areas we need to improve in.

"I think we were there or thereabouts for 70 minutes against the Crusaders. And it was just about ball retention at the weekend. Trying to build pressure…we gave the Hurricanes easy outs by not holding the ball.

"If we can stick to our structures, and hold on to the ball, I'm sure we will be more of a threat," Evans said.

Assistant coach Clarke Dermody said there were no grey areas in why the side lost at the weekend.

"We turned over the ball 48 per cent of the time. That's a stat we track through the game. It's about learning from that. And if we are heading that way again, how we change it during the game.

"It was a game where we felt like if we executed, we win," he said.

Dermody said there was no faulting the effort the team was putting in. But they needed to make a lift in their accuracy. That was down to not over-running the ball or having balls hitting players in the chest.

Looking ahead to the Blues, Dermody noted changes in their method.

"They're using the ball a lot more, they like to play on top of you with a little momentum, and they've got big ball carriers.

"They're a team you don't want inside your 22m. They are pretty clinical when they get opportunities in that last zone of the field.

"It's going to be a real challenge for us," he said.

But, he added, the Highlanders would go a long way to upsetting the northerners if they could finally eliminate their errors.
